This is Marketing

I'm a follower of Seth Godin's teachings. I believe that a Product/Service should always aim at being Remarkable and i believe that Marketing is about telling Stories.

Stories make the Brain connect, it's the best form of Neuromarketing and the best form of Content Marketing. Still Storytelling is an art that brands need to improve and craft.

Adidas did it right, this is good Marketing.

This Youtube Video has everything good Marketing should have, a real Story. Adidas is the center of the Story but the Story is not fake.
This Story unlike many others is touching, it provides value to the brand by not visiting the factory or saying that "Our employees focus on the customer".

Adidas got it right, hope other Brands that try to tell Stories can see the value in this piece of Video.

SuperConductiveRabbi's Online Testament and User Manual

Yesterday i was browsing Reddit, as i always do, and decided to go to r/Bestof. A user named SuperConductiveRabbi commented on a thread about Imgur and Cookies.

The answer blew my mind and i promised the user i would share his theory. He just said he would like to call it SuperConductiveRabbi's Online Testament and User Manual

Here's the Lifecycle of Every Single Online Service a.k.a SuperConductiveRabbi's Online Testament and User Manual

1.   The Early Days

The website provides one service and provides it well.

2.   Traction

People recognize that the website's service is excellent, and flock to it.

3.   Maturity

The website's creators are elated at their newfound success, and, seeking to improve their service, begin to perform upgrades, updates, design changes, and create exploratory features.

4.   Bloat

The website is either no longer growing at the rate it once was, leading the creators to start implementing predatory features that return greater revenue per visitor, OR it begins to morph into such a complicated and burdensome entity that it now offers n services instead of just one, where n is a number that increases until step five is reached.

5.   The autumn years

People start to notice that the website no longer provides the one service they care about as well as it used to, and start looking for a competitor that will provide that one service and provide it well.

Imgur is now on Step 4.

How GoPro went Viral through Content

Found a great article about how the GoPro developed into this giant community of hardcore users and fans. Here it is:

"GoPro, maker of high-definition personal cameras for adrenaline junkies, does do some traditional advertising. But that’s not how it built its loyal following of nearly 2.6 million YouTube subscribers.
Its YouTube channel is packed with videos of customers skydiving, base jumping and deep sea diving. Whatever your extreme passion, GoPro has a vertigo-inducing, user-generated video for you. Rarely a week goes by without a GoPro-filmed feat going viral on Reddit or Facebook.
This media strategy, explored in greater length in a previous article on The Next Web, is resonating with customers to the tune of 3.8 million cameras sold last year, according to CNN money.
It’s an example of a company knowing its market, and fostering a content strategy that allows fans of the product to share their experiences. The message is subtle but clear: purchasing a GoPro is more than just buying a camera—it’s buying an experience."

5 Things we learned from Premier League this Week

Another great Premier League Weekend is over. I feel like this Weekend was an important one for the future of Premier League from now on.

1.Manchester United got the best boost

A decisive goal in the last minutes plays a moral role no other goal does. They got a certain drama, they are quite a beauty and unforgettable. This last minute goals specially on important games can change a team mental form, unite the locker, the coach and the fans. Last minute goals show players were giving 100% and that spirit provides many changes.

I expect United will be mentality much stronger in the next games and will not give up both defensively and offensively again.

This weekend has shown us United will be alive to fight for that Champions League they want so much.

I repeat the fact that Last Minute Goals have a Power and United can now take the benefits of scoring a Last Minute Goal in an decisive Match.

2. Tottenham is still a very messy land

The old Spurs, going up and down. Under the AVB, one of my personal favourites (I'm a FCPorto die hard fan), i was becoming a Spurs Fan, COYS was becoming a common word for me. Unfortunately as any narrative goes, they fired AVB and i though it was unfair, since i thought Franco Baldini was the one to blaim. That's other talks now.

Tottenham lost against Newcastle 1-2 at White Hart Lane, two goals conceded in almost 10 minutes, a short window for a tought loss. But let's look into the data with more depth.

The Spurs won the possession Battle (Peanuts against Newcastle), they had more shots 17 to 8, they had more dribbles, corners, throw ins and they only got less Aerial Duels. Statistically this shows that Tottenham has some game going on, they were indeed far superior in the game, so how did they lost?

Tottenham lost the game at the Half-Time, Newcastle understood how to beat the Spurs defense, Vertonghen is still not the Central Defender Tottenham needs and Eric Dier is not the superstar the first matches shown. Alan Pardew understood, as Tottenham was winning 1-0, what was needed to get a "Remontada". He subbed in Ameobi and Cabella, tweaked the 4231 formation quite a bit, got Tottenham's defense by surprise and boom 1-1, the second one came right after. Tottenham was never in the game again and Newcastle was always on top of situations.

This will happen to Tottenham again, the game was lost because one team was better prepared and outsmarted the other. Tottenham is very green at the moment, they need to understand what this squad is capable of and the pressure has to be low. Pochettino is far from the man to blaim in this situation.

Tottenham Hotspurs sits at the 11 place and i think they will do better, but for now, they are where their Football gets them.

3. City is still lacking consistency

Manchester City claimed the top spot of the Premier League last season, but they changed. They seem like a different team and when everybody thought the Premier League title would bring the consistency the team needs to be a threat in the Champions League, they seem like they can fail more.

City lost against the Hammers and i feel like some players were the key to the loss:

  • Dzeko is not a City Quality Striker 90% of the times
  • Hart is the Hart we all know, can be in the best and in the worst
  • Fernando cannot fail in the position he plays and he is not the Octopus he was while playing for FCPorto
  • Kompany failing every once in a while
  • Clichy has shown he is not the guy for the 1st 11
  • Jovetic better start to produce much more
  • Milner is lost in translation
The truth is this players are the key to the loss, but players are never the real key to a loss, since they are only paid to play. Sports Management of the team should take the blaim and i feel like the lack of consistency of Manchester City will translate in a vital loss of points this Season. Being 6 points away from Chelsea may start hurting too much.

4. Southampton marches in

Every Premier League there is a surprise team, but Southampton is going a bit too far, in a good way. They are showing that last year good performances were not Random, Pochettino fueled or "Star" Players based.

Under Ronald Koeman they are playing in a very solid 4-3-3 system, they are playing a possession football in which they get a lot of chances and shots and the defense is playing their part as well. Last game Alderweireld could have played better but the defense as whole was preety tough.

Southampton has only conceded 3 goals in 7 matches and the fire power of the team is something to be aware of , in 7 matches they scored 18 goals(!). In 7 matches they won 6 and lost 1 against Tottenham in a very tight match.

This Southampton is looking good and the 2nd place suits them, even though we all feel it won't be for long, going to Europe is happening and they will be a hard fight to team when the Champions League Spots are getting tighter.

5. Chelsea is still the strongest side

Another week is gone and Mou's side is still sitting on the Top of the Premier League. They're now 6 points away from the biggest competitor to win the Premier League City and 4 from the 2nd Southampton.

They got a draw against United in Old Trafford, so what? If there was one side that could have won that match, that side was Chelsea. They got the game all under control until the very last minute. Diego Costa is a main piece of this Chelsea and he was missing, still, i felt that Chelsea was the superior team there and Mourinho was happy enough with winning by one that he asked his troops to leave the fire zone. We would not blaim him if the game has ended at 93.

Chelsea is showing that they can manage Premier League with some ease and that's just brutal. Last Season i feel like Chelsea's problem was the small games, they were dropping points in the small games where they shouldn't. This season they got a team which can win the small games and getting Mou's Mastery to win the Big Games.

I would easily go All In for this Chelsea as Premier League 14/15 Winner.

6 Hacks to create the Perfect Stadium Atmosphere

When i watch a Football Match, either on the Stadium or not, one aspect i observe is how the manager, the staff, the team and the fans interact, this creates the Stadium Atmosphere.

The Stadium Atmosphere is what the Fan absorve from goingto the game, the fun, the excitement, the pain, the intensity, everything a match can provide as a feeling they absorve.

A Team can hack the stadium atmosphere through the Players, the Coach, the Fans, the Half-Time, the Sponsors... So why i still feel that teams ignore this major aspect?

Many Marketers ignore and focus on other areas like sponsorships, merchandising and internationalization. WRONG! Why? The Perfect Stadium Atmosphere will bring Sponsors, more Sales and a full Stadium.

How can i improve my Stadium Atmosphere?

 1. 100% Mentality

The team must show 100% mentality to the fans, never give up the game until the referee blows, pressure, running to everyball, physical game, even if the team is losing 2-0 the fans will notice they all are trying and that creates expectation and enthusiasm on the stands.

A Football Club nowaday must have all departments connected and with easy communication between them. The key here is having your marketing people being able to talk to the sport people and asking them how the manager can input this all effort mentality on players.

It may seem hard, but if you're players are not giving enthusiasm to your fans, winning or losing, they're not doing the job they should and that is a key aspect of a football manager's task.

100% Mentality will not only provide a better Stadium Atmosphere but will also play a main role in the game style. A great example is Atletico de Madrid last season.

2. Manager as Fuel

When hiring a Manager one of the thing i feel like teams ignore is the PR potential of the manger. A Football Manager should be a brand with value, teams should pick the Manager that has the package of good Football experience and results but also a very good PR potential because he will soon be the one that media got the aim on.

The Manager should be the Fuel of the fans and the team, they should all drink from the energy he provides. The Manager should never stop while on the pitch, should celebrate, should argue and should be the King of Conferences.

Jurgen Klopp is the perfect example and so is Mourinho, even Simeone.

The Management Board should understand the role of the Manager and the role he will play in order to create Stadium Atmosphere.

3. The Ultras

The Ultras, the core fans of your team. Not the core consumers that's another talk.
Ultras go with the team wherever the team go and play a major role in Home and Away games, they should never be ignore as a special audience.

They need a Business to Business approach, they generally sell tickets through their own channel or merchandising or a membership, they generate money through the Team, they are indeed a Business.

Ultras affect directly the Stadium Atmosphere they create the noise, the chants, the support, the defense of the club against rival fans. They have banners, flags and do unforgettable choreographies.

The other side of the coin, Ultras are sometimes related to violence, internal fights and other obscure subjects like drugs. Do not forget getting fined due to Ultra's actions is hard as well.

An exchange must be made in order to get the best from having a top notch Ultra's group or more than one, you should seek the Ultra's leader and negotiate in order to give them benefits to achieve your goals.

One easy way to have the ultras on your side is integrating one of the leaders in an important role position like Chief Liaison Officer. He will actually have internal roles but one of his roles is still managing the Ultras, so he will be able to see the two sides of the coin.

4. Improving Stadium Access

Stadium Access is one of the main reasons people decide to stay home instead of going to the stadium, customers avoid mental pains.
Trafic. Parking. Subway completely Full. Giant Lines to enter the Stadium. You know the process.

How can a Football Club focus on improving the access, a few takeaways:
  • Stadium only bus and subway
  • Private parking lots for free on game days
  • Deals with public transportation companies to drop prices on game day
  • Parking in other areas with shuttles to the stadium
  • Electronic and Paper tickets (Validating by Machine and Mobile)
  • Police to better flow the traffic
  • Activities outside the stadium to improve the flow of people getting in
Do a mix of strategies to have better access even if you think you already nail it and listen to your fans, they know the pain and they can express it.

5. Ticketing

This is my personal takeaway on the future of football. Ticketing will not be seen mainly as a revenue generator but instead as a Stadium Atmosphere generator.

Ticketing Pricing should aim to fill the stadium. Is a job of the Marketing department to understand what level of Pricing achieves the goal of filling the stadium. The better the place the highest the price is the main strategy, but, we also need to understand that if our sits are not filled we are failing to understand our Market.

Bundesliga prices are much lower than the other top leagues and they own the Stadium Experience like no other League.

Clubs should aim at promotions, game packages, offers and contests in order to have a stadium that even on the most "boring" game is full and a full stadium is an experience.

The Ticketing purpose is to understand the Market to fill the Stadium.

6. Home Grown Players

This last topic i feel is losing some importance, football is getting more and more globalized, and some times having players from all the countries open the Club's door to a fast internationalization.

FCPorto had a rampant growth in Colômbia with Falcao, then came James, then came Jackson, then came Quintero. Did i forget to mention that Porto is one of the most loved clubs in Colômbia now? The same is true for the brazilian market and now Porto got a Sponsorship deal with BMG one of the main Brazilian Banks.

Sporting Clube de Portugal experienced a similar success specially on Social Media, with Shikabala, Egyptians invaded Sporting all over the Internet.

This is a very gool policy for clubs that don't have such hype internationally to get international business and sponsorhips growing.

Still, for the Fan, there is nothing like the hardworking kid with some skills that they saw as a Junior and is now on the First Team.

The Fans see a Home Grown Player as a Fan of the club and one that will always have the 100% Mentality i discussed in the first point. Working your youngsters can be a Marketing trick to have players on your First Team that fans will give everything to protect.

Borussia Dortmund is a good case here, but so is Sporting and Porto with Rúben Neves now, the fans( me included) love the kid. Barcelona is another good example.

Crafting Home Grown Players is an art and a good policy for revenue, since you don't invest millions on a Home Grown Player, it's almost all Profit.

Keep in mind that if your Stadium is not giving you chills, something is wrong.
